Snakes!

Australia is famous for its incredible biodiversity and one of the most fascinating groups of animals found here are the pythons. With over 100 species calling this continent home, pythons can be found in nearly every habitat from the driest deserts to the lushest rainforests. But what makes these non-venomous snakes so remarkable?

Firstly, their sheer size and strength. Some species of pythons can grow to be several meters long with muscles so powerful they can easily overpower prey much larger than themselves. But despite their intimidating appearance pythons are actually quite docile creatures. Unlike venomous snakes with their deadly fangs, pythons rely on their teeth to hold onto their prey while they constrict with their incredibly strong muscles.

Another fascinating characteristic of pythons is their incredible ability to swallow prey whole - even if it's ten times the size of their head! Imagine being able to eat a meal the size of a beach ball. Pythons are able to do this because their jaw bones are split to allow them them to stretch their mouths wider than you'd ever think possible.

But pythons aren't just impressive to look at. They also play a crucial role in the Australian ecosystem. As constrictors, they help control populations of rodents and other pests ensuring a healthy balance in the environment. At Wildlife Whitsundays we're proud to showcase a wide variety of non-venomous pythons and educate visitors about their natural behaviours, habitats and conservation status.
